Women who first received Military Medals:
Dr. Mary E. Walker: First and only woman to receive a Medal of Honor.
Ann Leah Fox: First to receive the Purple Heart.
1LT Cordelia E. Cook: First to Receive the Bronze Medal. She also received
the Purple Heart, being the first woman to receive two military medals.
Lt. Edith Greenwood: First Woman to receive the Soilders Medal in 1943.
Lt. Elsie S. Lott: The first woman to receive the Air Medal.
Barbara Olive Barnwell: The first woman to receive the Navy-Marine Corps Medal for herioism.
Colonel Oveta Culp Hobby: First woman to receive the US Army Distinguished Service Medal in 1945.
More Firsts:
Loretta Walsh: She was the first woman to enlist into the Navy in 1917, and became
the first Yeoman.
Clara Mass: Was the First woman on a US postage stamp, after dieing from yellow fever
in the Spanish-American War.
Olive Hoskins: First woman to be promoted to Warrant Officer for the Army in 1926.
Genevieve and Lucille Baker: First set of twins sisters to join the Coast Guard.
Various Facts:
Since 1973, the number of women who were enlisted has increased from 1.6% to 8.5% in 1980, and 10.8% in 1989. Today there is over
229,000 women who serve actively.
A substantial amount of women who are in the military are minority women(38%)
The military population is very educated, however the standards for women educationally is higher for women then men. 99.8% of women in the military
have high school diplomas, and 98% of men have diplomas.
50% of jobs in the military are open to women. All Coast Guard Jobs are open to women, 97% are open in the Air Force, 59% are open in the Navy, 52% are
open in the Army, and 20% are open in the Marines.
1989, two women commanded Army companies in a combat operation (Panama invasion)
In the same time period, two women also were rewarded the Army's Air Medal.
Over 800 women participated in the Panama Invasion.
The Navy has 57,000 active duty women which is about 10% of the active duty force.
About 7,700 women currently serve on over 100 Navy and civilian ships.
The Navy astronaut aboard the Challenger, was the first US Military woman to go up into space.
The Marine Corp currently has 10,000 active duty women in their ranks.
The Air Force currently has 77,000 active duty women.
