Women of The Mexican-American War
1846-1848

Sarah Borginis
Born: Unknown
Died: 1866

Sarah enlisted with her husband into the 8th Calvary at the Jefferson Barracks, Mo. under the command of General Zachary Taylor. Sarah became the head cook at Fort Brown, and participated in the battle against the Santa Ana forces at Fort Brown. When the Mexicans invaded Fort Brown it is said that Sarah was issued a musket to help fight the battle, however she still never let her other duties faulter. She still maintained the meals for the company. She was given the honor of being a Colonel, and when she died in 1866, she was given a proper military burial at Fort Yuma. She was the first ranking army woman.
