Time Lines

At this time I only have a Navy time line, however I am working on getting a time line for all the services.

  • 1812:
    The War of 1812;?This the first time that women are recorded as being at sea. They were also nurses in the war.

  • 1908:
    The US Navy Nurse Corps were established.

  • 1916:
    The Navy Reserve Act calls for the enlistment of qualified people, which leads the Navy Secretary Josephus Daniels to ask "Is there any law that says a Yeoman must be a man?"

  • 1917:
    Right before the US enters World War I, the Navy Department authorizes the enrollment of women in the Naval Reserve as yeoman.

  • 1941:
    World War II

  • 1942:
    F.D.R. signs a law creating the WAVES-Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service-to fill World War II Slots.

  • 1945:
    U.S.S. Higbee is commissioned, the first Navy Warship named after a woman, Lenah S. Higbee, head of the Navy nurses of WWI.

  • 1950:
    Korean War

  • 1965:
    Vietnam War

  • 1972:
    Rear Admiral Alene Duerk is promoted which makes her the first woman to hold this rank.

  • 1973:
    Women are able to begin Navy Pilot Training. LTJG Judith Neuffer is the first military Aviatrix.

  • 1976:
    The first women enter the Naval Academy

  • 1978:
    Congress changes law, allowing women to serve aboard support ships.

  • 1990:
    Gulf War; Lt. Commander Darlene Iskra becomes the first woman to assume command of a ship, the U.S.S. Opportune.

  • 1994:
    The aircraft carrier U.S.S. Eisenhower becomes the first combat ship with women in its crew.

  • 1996:
    LTJG Erica Niedermeier is the first woman to fire Tomakhawk Cruise missles in combat.

  • 1999:
    Kosovo War

  • 2000:
    Commander Kathleen McGrath is the first woman to command a warship headed into harms way. Women now make up 14% of the Navy, and 12 of 220 admirals are women.
