My Opinions......
I am very Proud of being a woman in the military, hence my
making this page. Before joining the military I thought as many women
do today who are not in the military. I thought that the military was not a
place for women. Most of this was due to the influences of society.
I never thought that I as a woman would be able to deal with the hardships
and struggles of being in the military. I thought that I did not have
the strength to be a sailor, soldier, or airman. And to be honest the
last place that I thought that I would ever find myself would be in the
military. And honestly if times had not gotten hard for me financially
then I never would have even entered into the Navy. It was only because
while I was in college I ran into money problems and had no where to go
that I decided that I would join the Navy. Even after I
had joined I never thought that it would actually happen. My family
members never thought that I would follow through with it, nor did they
think that I would be in as long as I have been. I never even thought
that I would reenlist. At most I thought that I would serve my four
years and then I would be out. Well here I am almost 8 years later, I have
reenlisted, and I am in a career that will take me places.
I give credit to the military for giving me the strength to be an
independent woman. I give the military credit for giving me the maturity
that I lacked before I came in. I am now a better, stronger, and wiser
person, and I can actually say that I would not have been the person that
I am today if it was not for the military. If I could do it all again
I would have joined the military right after high school instead of going
right to college. I think that my opportunities would have been much greater
and I also think that I would have grown up at an earlier age.
If I could give any advice to women out there contemplating joining the military I would
say to go for it, but please do not take the same road that I did. Make sure that
you get a job that you will truly enjoy. Make sure that it is a job that you
will be able to do something with in the future. I made a mistake of not
thinking when I took my job, and I could have been further along in my
career, but I can only take it for experience. I now have the job that I
want and it is all worth it.
Also women please, do not let anyone make you think that you can not do your
job. At times you will run into certain individuals who will treat you as if you
are not equal. They will tell you or treat you like you can not do your job, please do
not let these individuals influence you to think as such. You can do anything that
you want to do. All you have to do is prove to yourself that you can do it and you will
show these selected individuals that you are capable of doing your job, and can be as much of a
soldier, sailor or airman as they can be. Now mind you not all are like this, but I am
sure that sometime in your career, you will run into these people. Don't let them discourage, or
frustrate you.
Thank you for reading my "soap Box".
