During the Spanish American War Dr. Anita Newcomb worked to gain rights for women as Nurses during the war. She fought to gain rank for the numerous women who were Nurses during this time. Problems during this time were that they did not have equal pay, they did not maitain a military status or held no rank, and they received no benefits such as the male soilders did. She drafted a legistlation to begin the process of giving these nurses some type of military status. In 1898 she became the first Army surgeon, and was assigned to train all the nurses who participated in the war.
